I implemented something of this sort on my own a few years ago, probably around the time the parent post was created.
Anyone who has googled for "home automation" has undoubtedly stumbled upon the X10 line of low cost consumer goods. Mostly they are just electrical relays with a proprietary signaling protocol such that a head unit can communicate "on/off" commands to any other x10 device interconnected via the electrical pathway itself.
So, given that from my computer I could easily turn the lights in my rented bedroom on and off, I downloaded a program called "Realize Voice", and, with a 40 dollar omni-directional microphone from Radio Shack, the same day had a low cost voice pattern matcher that could trigger external system calls.
I found that, even entirely alone, I was self-conscious using the system; how nerdy is walking into a room and sternly demanding "Lights, 40%!" |

I have been setting up the same system, Realize Voice and X10, and yeah it’s hard to get used to ordering lights on and off so I have installed the X10 switches which allows both manual and remote control. It is nice to not have to fumble for switches when I have to get up in the middle of the night though, just say “lights on” and wallah.
I’m interested in how you got the two to intergrate. The way I have done it is not very efficient. Even though it gets the job done there has got to be a better way. The only method I can figure to use is recording keyboard and mouse clicks. This means when I issue a lights on command, Realize Voice has to open the Activehome program, click the switch needed and close the program and this relies on every menu and icon in the program being in the exact same place always.
I am pretty much computer illiterate when it comes to programming and understanding protocol so any info you could share about making the two programs work together would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, if someone is only interested in controlling X10 products with voice commands there is a free program called “Bill’s X10 voice commander” ( BXVC0_43 is the file name) that works well. I am using Realize Voice for X10 control and other purposes as well. |
