The school offers acclaimed and accredited four-year undergraduate programs in industrial design, interior design, and visual communication design leading to a Bachelor of Science in Design (BSD) and a two-year graduate program leading to the Master of Science in Design (MSD). Arizona State University is transforming itself in leaps and bounds, based upon its “design aspirations” of a New American University. While academies of higher learning have existed for centuries, today we face social, economic, environmental and cultural challenges that demand new ways of thinking. ASU is in the process of reinventing higher education in America and is creating a place where local solutions have global impact. The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts is built on a combination of disciplines unlike any other program in the nation, comprising schools of: Architecture + Landscape Architecture; Art; Arts, Media and Engineering; Dance; Design Innovation; Music; and Theatre and Film as well as the ASU Art Museum and Future Arts Research at ASU. At a time when many universities are choosing to reduce or eliminate studies in design and arts disciplines, ASU has elevated creative practice to one of the core values of the nation’s largest research institution. We believe that designers, artists, architects, performers, and creative scholars are essential to our world today. We know that creativity not only enhances our culture, it broadens our vision, deepens our understanding, and enables us to innovate, grow and change.

We seek a visionary leader and dynamic thinker; someone who has the acuity of vision to foresee where the design profession is headed, and is able to translate insight into action. The Director is expected to provide leadership and support to a community of faculty, staff and external partners in developing and growing programs, generating new opportunities for research and enhancing the public profile of the school. The Director must demonstrate expertise in a field of study that has direct relevance to the design profession, whether this is design practice, management, education, sustainability, etc. In addition to administrative responsibilities, the Director is encouraged to teach one class a year and continue research or creative activities in her/his field.

Situated in the fifth-largest metropolitan region in the country, Phoenix, Ariz., the School of Design Innovation interacts with an active, acclaimed professional community. The greater Phoenix metropolitan area attracts a “creative class” from across the nation and around the world because of its outstanding cultural institutions, desirable climate, and global connections. Housed in one of the largest, research intensive institutions in the country, the School of Design Innovation offers ample opportunities for collaboration with myriad disciplines housed on four campuses. Appropriately, ASU is home to an extensive array of research projects focused on human factors, sustainability, healthcare, digital visualization technologies, and the built environment. Programs offered by the school continue to be among the most highly rated in North America. The school seeks a Director who will foster collaboration with other institute programs including those in architecture + landscape architecture; arts, media and engineering; art; dance; music; and theatre and film.

Required Qualifications: Earned a master’s degree in industrial design, interior design, graphic design or a related design discipline; a record of achievement in the above fields or a related discipline appropriate to the rank of professor; and, demonstrated abilities in leadership, strategic planning, and fund-raising. Significant administrative experience in a college or university or large-corporate setting; excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills; and, a highly organized approach to leadership also required.
